The Cup of Death - The Gift of Life

by David Singer

"The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the nexus of our faith--the key to restored relationship with God.  The story of God coming to earth as one of us to die, at first glance, seems outrageously far-fetched.  Yet all of Scripture either seems to point toward Christ's crucifixion or deals with the new reality of renewed relationship brought about through this historical event.  Although it is Christ's resurrection that concludes the "life and death" drama of Holy Week, in a sense, the resurrection serves as God's unambiguous confirmation that his forgiveness was accomplished -- the spell of sin broken -- and that Christ's victory over death has, indeed, been won."  ...

... "God, through his Son, suffered death so that we might live.   In the book of Hebrews (2.14b, 15) it says, 'Jesus himself became like (us) and shared (our) human nature.  He did this so that through his death he might destroy the Devil, who has the power over death, and in this way set free those who were slaves all their lives because of their fear of death.'  It is the gift of Good Friday and the confirmation of Easter.  God, through Christ, suffered the pain -- the spiritual pain of separation -- for our sins.  Such is God's love gift offered to us this and every Easter."
